Ending a School Enrolment

You have decided to home educate, but what comes next?

Wanting to know about the process to move from a school classroom to home education?

Once you have made your decision to home educate, you need to inform your school in writing that your child’s enrolment is ending and provide them with the date.

The date can be today, tomorrow, or next week. But needs to be before or when you plan to apply for home education with HEU/QHE.

You can inform the school by email. There is a template for you to use HERE.

You are no longer required to maintain any contact with the school from this point forward. Anything further is optional, and you are not required to provide them with proof of anything.

Schools have access to internal policies and pathways to confirm any information they wish to have confirmed. This is NOT your responsibility as the parent.

The school cannot prevent your from home educating, just as they cannot maintain the enrolment beyond your request. They have access to a process to escalate the matter for checking by more appropriately appointed staff if they do not have the capacity to do so.

If you have the school harassing you for further details, but you do not want to engage with the school or receive ongoing notifications that your child is still enrolled, you can send the school THIS DOCUMENT.

If the school is still refusing to comply with the regulatory requirements or it has been escalated to the regional office, and the regional office is providing incorrect or misinformed information, please use our CONTACT FORM to have this addressed by an advocate on your behalf.

You can contact the Queensland Home Education Unit via the following options:

After the school has been notified...

now the fun begins!

To apply for home education, you need to completely the application form on the following HEU/QHE website.

You need the following documents to be approved for home education:

  1. Proof of age/parental responsibility (usually a birth certificate)
  2. Educational plan
  3. Declaration

These do not need to be attached to submit the application, but they are required for the application to be processed, so it is best to do as soon as you can manage.
