2025 Parliament House Teen Tour

✨ An Inspiring Day at Parliament House for Our Home Educating Teens ✨

Today our Springfield-based teen homeschool group joined forces with Free2homeschool with the privilege of an amazing visit to Parliament House — and what an unforgettable experience it was!

We are deeply grateful to the members and staff of Parliament who welcomed our group with warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in our young learners.

A heartfelt thank you to Maria & Lisa for guiding us through a rich, informative, and hands-on exploration of Parliament House and the processes involved and Mr James Lister for adding a depth that we could not have experienced otherwise. Our students were fully engaged as they gained first-hand insight into how decisions are made, how debates unfold, and how our democratic processes function behind the scenes.

One of the standout moments was having Mr Lister, a current member of Parliament, join us for the entire tour, walking alongside our teens, answering their questions, and sparking extra discussions as we moved between rooms and after. This personal engagement made the experience truly special and left a lasting impression on the group.

A special thank you to Hon Di Farmer and her team who arranged personalised attendance certificates for every student. Even though Hon Farmer was unable to attend in person, it was such a thoughtful touch for Brit from Di Farmer’s office, to personally present the certificates in Di Farmer’s absence — that meant so much to the teens.

Throughout the tour, our students explored a number of significant spaces within Parliament House, including the old upper house room, the current chamber of the lower house, the members’ reading room — with years upon years of documented activity within parliament, as well as exploring the historical architecture of the original building and learning about when the new building was constructed and added as an extension.

In the members’ reading room, students learned how members of Parliament once sourced reference materials for writing speeches — compared to how they access information today from the well-resourced lamp. The teens were fascinated by how these processes have evolved, blending the traditions of the past with modern digital research tools.

We also learned the fascinating origin of the word “Hansard”, discovering that it is named after the Hansard family — specifically Luke Hansard, who first took on the responsibility of official parliamentary reporting. It was a wonderful reminder of how much history is embedded in the everyday workings of Parliament.

The teens participated in a scripted mock debate, to experience the workings of a debate as well as roleplay in various roles within the chamber, acting as member and staff roles and mimicking their activities.

Whilst this was occurring, Amanda even had a chance to dial in and have a quick video chat to see how the teens were going.

A heartfelt appreciation to Mr James Lister, the member for Southern Downs, who not only joined us during the tour but also stayed for and hosted lunch with the group, taking extra time to connect with and encourage the students in their interests on the political landscape. We can’t thank

And a final thank you for Jess of the Springfield Teens group everyone who helped make this meaningful, memorable experience for our home-educating teens and their families through her scheduled term excursions. Days like today remind us why community connection matters so deeply. 🙌💛
