YMCA Youth Parliament Program 2026
Civics in Action: A Home Educators’ Guide
For home ed students looking to take their civics education into the real world, the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament (QYP) offers a unique opportunity. This program stands out as a premier platform for young people to learn about the legislative process, develop leadership skills, and actually influence state policy.
We want to encourage any home ed students and graduates aged 16-25 years who are passionate about making a difference in your community so here is everything you need to know about the 2026 QYP program…
What is the Queensland Youth Parliament?
The QYP is described as “quite literally, a Parliament of young people”. It is a non-partisan forum that selects 93 young people—one for every state electorate—to bridge the gap between legislators and youth.
For home ed community’s senior students, this is an immersive educational experience.
It is not just a simulation; the program is run in collaboration with the Queensland Government and the Queensland Parliamentary Service, ensuring a high standard of debate and an authentic experience within the Legislative Chamber.
What Will You Do?
Participating in QYP is a commitment that spans several months, offering a blend of remote work and intensive in-person events. Here is what the student experience looks like:
1. Nomination and Appointment (January – March) You start by nominating yourself online to represent your local electorate. If selected, you become the “Youth Member” for that area.
2. Launch Weekend (April 17–19) The program kicks off with a weekend where you meet your fellow Youth Members and your specific portfolio team. During this time, you will discuss ideas and decide on the topic for your “Youth Bill”.
3. The Meeting Phase (May – September) This phase is highly compatible with flexible homeschooling schedules. During these months, participants:
- Write and amend their Youth Bills.
- Attend committee meetings and consult with stakeholders and Ministers.
- Engage with their local community and potentially shadow their actual Member of Parliament (MP).
4. Residential Sitting Week (September 27 – October 3) This is the highlight of the program. Participants spend a week living together (Residential), debating their bills in the actual Queensland Parliamentary Chamber, and meeting politicians and change-makers. It is a time for debating, relaxing with new friends, and experiencing life as a representative.
Why Should You Apply?
Beyond the educational value of learning how laws are made, the QYP has a history of genuine impact. Past Youth Acts have influenced actual legislation, including:
- Establishing student fares for public transport.
- Raising the legal age for tobacco use.
- Criminalising the sharing of intimate images without consent.
- Introducing stronger safety obligations for ride-sharing apps.
Furthermore, it is a chance to make “lifelong friendships” and develop essential soft skills like public speaking and leadership.
