Writing to your MP WA
Your Voice Matters: How (and Why) to Contact Your MP Today
Over the last several months, it has become incredibly clear that a number of Western Australian families are feeling a deep sense of unease. We see you, we understand, and we hear you: there are widespread and increasing concerns across our community regarding the recent policy changes being implemented by the Department—and, perhaps more importantly, the lack of transparent, genuine consultation regarding how these changes came about in the first place.
When procedural frameworks like arbitrary travel reporting or rigid monitoring standards are pushed through without robust community input, it feels like decisions about our lives and our children’s education are being made entirely behind closed doors. It is easy to feel small when facing these sudden shifts in a large bureaucratic system.
But there is a fundamental truth we must remember: The government works for you.
Your local Member of Parliament (MP) exists to represent your interests, your family, and your freedom to educate your children. If you feel your voice isn’t being heard or that home education interests are being sidelined, contacting your MP is one of the most direct and powerful tools you have to demand administrative accountability.
Here is why your voice matters, a ready-to-use template you can download, and a directory to help you find your representative immediately.
Why Contacting Your MP Actually Works
They Need Your Vote: MPs are elected by the people in their local area (their electorate). They know that an unhappy, organised community of constituents can directly influence the next election. Your concerns matter to them because your vote matters to them.
They Can Bypass Bureaucracy: While writing letters to a department often results in automated or standard policy responses, an MP has the authority to write directly to the Minister for Education. When a Minister receives an official inquiry from an MP on behalf of a constituent, the department is legally required to investigate and provide a formal response.
It Builds a Track Record: If only one person complains, it is easy for a department to dismiss it as an isolated incident. But if ten, twenty, or fifty families from the same electorate write to their MP about identical issues—like rigid monitoring or unfair failure of consultation—the MP realises there is a systemic issue affecting their community.
Download Your MP Advocacy Template
To make this as easy as possible, we have put together a professional letter template. It handles the structural formalities and legal phrasing for you, leaving a dedicated space where you can easily drop in your own details and personal experiences.
Tip: When using the template, keep it civil but firm. The most critical section is your personal story—tell them exactly how shifting departmental guidelines or monitoring practices are affecting your family’s daily life, and don’t forget to explain why consultation with every family, allowing you to have a say is important to you.

Change doesn’t happen by waiting for the system to correct itself. It happens when everyday families step up, speak clearly, and remind our elected officials exactly who they are in office to serve. Download the template, find your MP in the list above, and make sure your voice is heard.
